Military, rebels on alert status amid truce-A A +A
Tuesday, December 24, 2013
THE 4th Infantry Division of the Philippine Army (4th ID-PA) will remain on alert status amid the declaration of ceasefire by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP-CC) and the Government of the Republic of the Philippines (GRP).
In a statement posted on its website, the Central Committee of the CPP declared truce from 12 a.m. on 24 December to 11:59 on 26 December, and at 12:00 p.m. on December 31 to 11:59 of January 2, 2014.
President Benigno Aquino III, meanwhile, declared a ceasefire with the CPP that started Saturday last week until January 15, 2014.
Both parties are in accord to declare truce in unity with the Filipino people in the observance of Christmas and New Year holidays.
“Our troops (4th ID-PA) are on alert,” said 4ID spokesperson Captain Christian Uy. He said rebels might do something bad within the two three-day ceasefire by the CPP.
Uy said the CPP-NPA “could not be trusted” given their previous experiences with them.
He said that in the recent local elections, the CPP declared a ceasefire but launched a tactical offensive immediately the day after the elections.
Uy also cited the raid launched by rebels on a privately owned pig farm in Libona town, Bukidnon, in the last week of October.
The CPP-CC reminded its commands and units that while in “active defensive” stance, the group should remain vigilant against any intrusion of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) in areas where the people’s democratic government are established.
On December 26, the CPP is set to enjoin the revolutionary forces to participate the 45th anniversary of the re-establishment of the group.
Uy is hoping that the truce would be forever and suggested that both parties should talk things over.
He said the government declared a 26-day unilateral ceasefire to give ample time for the Filipinos to celebrate the holiday.
The CPP-CC, however, posted on its website that “to declare a ceasefire to last forever will only bring forth an eternal hell of military abuses, land grabbing and environmental destruction.”
It added that to “muzzle the guns of the NPA” is to cede the clinics, the farms and the peace the peasant masses established through their new democratic government that their collective strength built.
