NORTHERN Mindanao has reported six cases of stray bullets during the New Year revelries, a health official said Thursday.
Dr. Adriano P. Subaan, assistant regional director of the Department of Health (DOH) in Northern Mindanao, said three of these cases were admitted at the Northern Mindanao Medical Center (NMMC), and the other three at the City Government-run JR Borja Memorial Hospital (JRBMH).
Subaan said they considered this alarming, compared with the number of cases nationwide. He clarified, though, that in all of these cases, the victims were outpatients.
Out of the six cases, two of the victims are residents of Xavier Heights Subdivision in Upper Carmen, he added.
Nathia Gundran, attending nurse at the JRBMH, identified the victims as Jonas Alaman and Gina Bahian.
She said she could not anymore recall which part of Alaman’s body was injured, but Bahian sustained a gunshot wound on her left knee.
Subaan personally monitored the two hospitals on Thursday afternoon and noted not only stray bullets were recorded but more victims suffered injuries due to firecrackers.
He said 73 cases were recorded at the NMMC, comprising 60 percent of the total figure of injured from December 21 until January 2 due to the use of firecrackers.
Most cases involved children aged five to nine and 10 to 14 years old, Subaan said, adding that these cases involved the use of Piccolo, which is one of the firecrackers deemed illegal by the government.
Subaan said this figure is also alarming, but gladly noted that there were no casualty among the victims.
He said they would need a more aggressive move in the campaign against the use of firecrackers in the coming days.
Subaan will convene concerned government agencies, especially the local government units, to draw plan to achieve a zero, if not lesser, cases of firecracker and stray bullet victims during the holiday season.
Subaan also noted a high number of cases of vehicular accidents during the holidays. He said this would also be taken up during the meeting of government officials.
