A CAGAYAN de Oro City legislator is calling for a consensus among stakeholders before any increase in public utility jeepney (PUJ) fare takes effect.

City Councilor Roger Abaday said the sentiments of all sectors must be heard to avoid delay in the implementation of the fare hike.

Various transport groups in Northern Mindanao announced they would file a petition for a P1 fare hike, making the minimum fare to P8.50 compared with the present fare at P7.50.

Abaday, City Council’s chairman on public utilities, said the committee will summon all sectors concerned to a hearing to strengthen multi-sectoral involvement especially that everybody will be affected once the increase is implemented.

Abaday said he would ask leaders of transport groups and representatives from various sectors to meet and have a round-table discussion on the issue.

The transport sector has been announcing that the series of increases in petroleum products are hurting the operators and drivers, but Abaday said it is not enough to hear a single side.

He said representatives from various sectors must talk and weigh if there is really a necessity to raise the minimum PUJ fare.

Abaday understands the sentiments of the transport sector, but he said the riding public has also the right to be heard.

He agrees with the operators and drivers on their claims that the roll back of fuel prices is lower compared to the price hike that oil companies have been implementing twice or thrice every month since the last quarter of 2013.

Abaday said his committee will do its best to protect public interest and that the government should not be blamed for the increase in fuel price or the minimum PUJ fare.

He said aside from the committee meetings, a series of public consultations that is open to all concerned agencies and individuals must also be conducted.

“Sabot-sabotan lang aron pag-implement wala nay reklamo (We need to agree on this, so there’d be no complaints once it (fare hike) is implemented,” he said.
