Price of fish up

A SIGNIFICANT price increase of fish sold in the market has been observed due to insufficient supply, as the low pressure area barreled Mindanao for almost two weeks now, Imee Austria of Cagayan de Oro Fish Brokers Association said.

From the previous price of P100 per kilo, the price of a first-class fish has been doubled due to scarcity, she said.

Austria said fish brokers usually get their fish from the western part of Mindanao, but due to the inclement weather the supply dwindles.

It worsened when Larapan Bridge in Lanao del Norte collapsed on January 13. Fish from the western region couldn’t be easily transported as travel has been difficult.

Austria said it has been more than a week now since the bridge collapsed, forcing fish carriers to pass through a different yet more difficult route to get to the city's fish landing at the Bulua Public Market.

“Only those ‘kursunada (gutsy)’ owners of fish cars would dare pass through areas in Pagadian heading to Lanao del Sur via the municipalities of Tukuran, Labangan, and Marawi City with the last stop in Iligan City,” Austria said.

“In the past, each of the brokers gets percentage from more than two fish cars a day, but due to the scarce supply of fish we barely get our percentage share. Sometimes, in a day we get none,” she added.

For consumers like Debbie Tan, the price increase of fish is almost unbearable.

“Before, the price of tilapia at Cogon market is P80 but now it has gone up to P150,” Tan said.

Tan, who goes on a fish diet, said she has no choice but to bear with the new price.
