Fire bureau warns vs use of substandard appliances-A A +A
Monday, February 10, 2014
AS THE observance of fire prevention in March approaches, the City Fire District warned the public anew against use of substandard appliances that has been tagged as one of the causes of fire incidents in Cagayan de Oro City.
Senior Fire Officer 1 Victor Naive, fire investigator, said Sunday that substandard appliances are not designed for longer hours, as their materials, particularly the wires, are thinner and prone to short circuit as compared with the standard ones.
Naive made the warning in connection with the recent fire incident in Barangay Kauswagan, where a bunkhouse inside a private company compound was reduced to ashes following the explosion of an electric fan that was plugged for hours on Friday evening.
“There was an electric fan that could have been oscillating for hours, eventually overheated and eventually had short circuit. Based on our investigation, it has caused the fire,” Naive said.
He said the bunkhouse, made of light materials, was the shelter of the workers of the said private firm.
No one was there when the incident happened, Naive added.
Naive said the fire broke out at 9:20 p.m. of February 7.
Firefighters put the blaze under control after a five-minute hose down.
The damage to property was placed at P30,000.
Also last Friday, a fire gutted a food warehouse in Capistrano Complex in Barangay Gusa.
Senior Fire Officer 3 Jeffrey Kionisala said the blaze started in an area where the ham products of Slers Foods Corporation are cooked, but investigators are yet to determine the cause of the fire.
Witnesses in the area said they heard a blast inside the warehouse.
Fortunately, none of the gas tank exploded, which could have caused the fire to spread quickly all over the storage facility and neighboring residences in the area.
The fire department received the fire call at 11:30 a.m. and the fire was declared under control at 11:55 a.m. At 12:10 p.m., firefighters declared a fire-out.
The damage has not been determined.
Naïve said the Kauswagan blaze was the 20th case of fire incidents that hit residential structures and warehouse, including grassfires this year.
