TO ENSURE that political leaders fulfill their election promises of progress and development, there is a need for the populace not to be just fence-sitters but to be conscientious, said an official of a newly organized group in Cagayan de Oro City.

Civil society group Nagkahiusang Kagay-anon (NK), consisting of representatives from the city’s various sectors, was organized at the Patrick Cronin Formation Center of the St. Augustine Metropolitan Cathedral compound Friday afternoon.

Mitos Ortigas, NK convenor, said the group was formed with the social, political and economic changes in mind.

Believing that the community stands a better chance of attaining development goals, Ortigas said there should be a well-coordinated collaboration between the community members and the local government.

“Undoubtedly, civil society and local government officials will achieve more when we all join hands to work for the achievement of the common needs and aspirations of all sectors of our society,” Ortigas said.

NK is a coalition of any concerned citizens, groups, interfaith, intercultural and non-partisan, consisting of business people, professionals, students, the academe, grassroots and marginalized community which will tackle, discuss and represent “the issues and concerns of the people for the promotion of the common good, through good governance and responsible citizenship, toward the realization of inclusive growth and development, peace and solidarity in the city,” an NK fact sheet stated.

Ortigas said the “NK has committed themselves to work together for a common cause under this guiding spirit.”

During the opening statement, Ortigas laid out the 10-point agenda that the group is advocating, among them: Improvement of the city’s water system; Health program for the poor; Increased budget allotment for the J.R. Borja General Hospital; Cagayan de Oro’s peace and order; Rehabilitation and preservation of the environment; Enforcement of traffic rules and regulations; Transparency of transactions at the city hall; Balanced integrated urban-rural development; Access to information on government transaction as a basic right of every Kagay-anon; and Active civil society participation in planning and operating the city infrastructure including power, water and communications.

“In other words, we, the citizens, have to take serious and active participation in the development of our city,” she said.

Ortigas said the people must not be contented with the performance of the local leaders.

“We cannot just leave it to the elected officials because right now what we experience is the political bickering. Since this is non-partisan group, all we care, all we want is the development of our city,” she said.

“This is what we will work for, and we will not stop until we have a better Cagayan for ourselves,” she added.

At present, NK’s member-organizations include: Bishops-Businessmen Conference, Oro Chamber of Commerce, Zonacor Association, Bohai, Ficco, cooperatives’ task force “Too-Big,” Rotary Club of West CDO; Touch Foundation Inc., Balay Mindanaw Foundation Inc., Save CDO, KKP-SIO of Xavier University, Balaod Mindanaw, FCOF; Cafesca, KonekCoord, A4 Mindanao Alliance, Isla Cupa Homeowners Association, Ficupo Inc., Pagatpat Farmers Association; PYDP, Mass-Specc, Konsumanteng Kagay-anon, Group Foundation Inc., Social Action Center of the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro, BM Peace Center, Archdiocesan Good Governance Apostolate, Sulog, Catavitsco and Cagayan de Oro Press Club.
