LINAMON, Lanao del Norte – A two-year-old girl and her four relatives were rescued after the row boat they boarded capsized off the shore of a coastal village Magoong in Linamon town in Lanao del Norte early Saturday morning.
While some soldiers belonging to the 2nd Mechanized Infantry Brigade of the Philippine Army were on sea patrol and their colleagues where on standby near the shore waiting for a team building activity to start, they saw the row boat capsized which was around 800 meters away from the shore.
Col. Demmy Tejares, the troop’s brigade commander told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro, "I noticed that the banca (row boat) capsized with its passengers floating and waving asking for help. We immediately boarded the rubber boat and sped toward the site while the other team on patrol went ahead and threw life jackets to the victims."
Tejares dived to save the girl and handed her to the other rubber boat manned by Capt. Rene Doroteo.
Tejares massaged the shaken and traumatized child to at least recover from her terrifying experience.
The army rescued Raymond Bartolata, Ryan Tinoy (the child’s father), Rhena (child) and Jean Tinoy, Arnold Villanueva and Edgar Atay.
Ryan thanked the soldiers for saving them.
"Pasalamat gyud ko sa mga sundalo nga mi salba namo kung wala sila naa gyud mamatay namo (I am grateful to soldiers who rescued us, had it not for them , maybe one of us would have died),” Ryan said.
On April 24, 2013, the 2nd Mechanized Brigade rescue team also saved passengers on board an overloaded pumpboat in Kauswagan municipal waters. The group was watching "Hugyaw sa Kadagatan" and fortunately, no one was reported hurt.
On April 24, 2014 the team also provided sea patrol while the contingents of the festival were performing and participating in the annual tourism attraction of Kauswagan town.
