ON ITS third year of implementing the K to 12 curriculum, the Department of Education in the region (DepEd-10) sent some of its educators for a training for "trainers on teaching Grades 3 and 9" at DepEd Cebu EcoTech.

One-hundred nine trainers for teaching Grade 3 from April 27-May 3, 2014 and 111 for teaching Grade 9 from April 20-26, 2014 were sent to Cebu to train their districts and institutions simultaneously to teach incoming Grade 3 and Grade 9 students which are products of the K to 12 curriculum.

The trainers were supervisors, principals, master teachers and school heads chosen from each division.

For the training in teaching Grade 3, trainers for each division will be sent to train the teachers from their respective districts.

For the training in teaching Grade 9, the teacher education institution service providers for secondary education and centers for excellence in teacher education Xavier University, Liceo de Cagayan, Capitol, University, and Bukidnon State University will hold the trainings.

These trainings in the centers and divisions will simultaneously be held on May 12-16, 2014, said Maia Epra Magnaog, educational program supervisor of DepEd-10.

Joyce Sabanpan, educational program supervisor of DepEd-10, said that one struggle of DepEd last year during the second year of implementation of the K to 12 is the lack of materials for the curriculum.

“It is a process, a spiral, progressive type of transition… Naa pa mi sa ikatulo na ladder (We are still on the same ladder),” she said.

She furthered that “DepEd is trying to bridge the gap like the lack of classrooms [and] lack of teachers.”

Evaluation of last year’s implementation of K to 12 has yet to be conducted, said Magnaog.

She added the DepEd is still waiting for the National Achievement Test results to see the output of the new curriculum.
