ILIGAN CITY – Agents of the Philippine Drugs Enforcement Agency in Northern Mindanao (PDEA-10) nabbed a person, suspected to be involved in a drug syndicate, who claimed a package in one of the mail couriers in Iligan City around 2 p.m. Tuesday.
“The package contained 16 pairs of children’s sandals from Caloocan City. Lodged in the outer sole of each sandal was methamphetamine hydrochloride or 'shabu' placed inside a plastic bag and wrapped with carbon paper to prevent x-ray detection,” PDEA agent known only as Tor told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro.
The illegal substance reached 34 packs or one kilo, two packs of which were found inside the car of a suspect identified as Mansawi Sumangcad Odin of Marawi City.
The PDEA said a kilo of shabu has an estimated street value of P7 million.
“We received information from Manila that a suspected package would arrive in Iligan City which was the subject of apprehension in the presence of Philippine National Police (PNP), National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) representative, Department of Justice (DOJ), barangay council and media representative,” Tor said.
Tor added: “This is the third haul of shabu nabbed in Iligan City in the past two months which totaled to almost four kilos amounting to P22 million.”
Iligan City Mayor Celso Regencia lauded the relentless efforts of PDEA, PNP, and NBI to curb the proliferation of illegal drugs in the city.
“Though we don't have sufficient intelligence fund, I am calling the constituents, barangay officials and other agencies to unite and fight illegal drugs which victimized not only adults but students,” Regencia added.
Senior Superintendent Gerry Rosales, Iligan City police director said, “We will continue to intensify law enforcement against illegal drug syndicate.”
