A FIRE in Sitio Sto. Niño, Barangay Lapasan on Friday night damaged around P500,000 worth of properties, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) said.
Rey Diaz, 55, Virginia Geroy, 42, Janet delos Reyes, 42, Agripina Talisayan, 56, and Breck Lombre, 39, were left homeless after a third alarm conflagration burned down their homes.
According to the BFP, two houses were destroyed while the other three dwellings were damaged.
The initial investigation showed that the fire stemmed either from faulty wirings or at a dirty kitchen at the second floor of Geroy’s house.
However, the BFP still has to conduct further investigation on the incident.
Delos Reyes narrated to Sun*Star Cagayan de Oro via phone they were lucky that she woke up before even the fire spread to her house.
“Before we knew it, my husband said ‘do not bother to go down. The commotion outside are just quarrels in the neighborhood’,” Delos Reyes said, adding they were shocked when she stood up from bed and saw the fire slowly eating up their stairs.
She furthered: “Life is more important than anything else so we didn’t mind the height as we jumped off from the second story of the house to the ground.”
Geroy also said that luck was on their side since they were still awake when the incident happened.
Meanwhile, Diaz was trying to save bits and pieces of their properties razed by the fire despite the misfortune.
“It pained me seeing my house razed to the ground since we’ve been living in here for 30 years now,” he added.
After being sheltered in a health center in the barangay, the five families composed of 20 individuals are in better situation as they temporarily take shelter in their relatives’ houses, said Omar Labuntog, Lapasan barangay captain.
Before the BFP declared a “fire out” at 12 midnight, Teodoro Sabuga-a, City Social Welfare and Development officer-in-charge, said relief goods have been distributed to the victims.
The local governments of Lapasan and Cagayan de Oro also handed financial assistance to the families affected to startup a new life, Sabuga-a added.
