Oro cops roll out anti-scalawag unit

Wednesday, February 15, 2017

THE Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (Cocpo) Wednesday, February 15, announced the formation of its own unit that will root out scalawags in the city police force.

Described as its equivalent to the Counter-Intelligence Task Force (CITF) formed by Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Ronald Dela Rosa, acting city police director Senior Superintendent Gerardo Rosales said the unit, named the Spot Correction Team (SCT), will be composed of 18 PNP personnel from the administrative and intelligence units of Cocpo.

Chief Inspector Ariel Philip Pontillas, Cocpo intelligence unit chief, will lead the team in carrying out the internal cleansing among the PNP ranks.

Rosales said the SCT’s primary job is to identify who among the members of Cocpo are possibly involved in illegal gambling, illegal drugs, and other forms of criminality.

He said policemen who are found to have been engaging in illegal activities will be made to explain and will be subjected to administrative sanctions.

"Ang task ng team ay iikot sila sa buong siyudad at titingnan lahat na mga deployed police. Kung may infraction ipapa-explain natin at sisiguraduhin natin hindi sila makakalusot," Rosales said.

Upon his assumption as temporary Cocpo chief Wednesday as replacement of Senior Superintendent Ronnie Francis Cariaga, who was reassigned in the Southwestern Tagalog region, Rosales ordered the launching of a one-time big-time operation dubbed "Lambat-Sibat" which led to the arrest of 40 wanted persons.

Oplan "Lambat-Sibat" is part of the PNP’s anti-criminality efforts focused on arresting persons with pending warrants of arrest.

Rosales presented to the media the arrested suspects who had pending arrest warrants for murder, rape, theft, robbery, physical injury, violations on illegal gambling and illegal drugs law, and traffic violations.

"Naka-focus ang police sa war on drugs kaya hindi na serve ang mga warrants kaya kumuha tayo ng alias warrants of arrest ito yung ginamit natin pag-serve sa kanila," Rosales said.

Rosales said Cocpo will focus on effecting an effective peace and order drive as well as internal cleansing.

"I-instill natin ang discipline sa Cocpo personnel dahil ang cleansing ay nag-start sa sarili like pagsuot ng complete at proper uniform," he said.
