CAGAYAN de Oro City Government inaugurated Wednesday, March 15, the biggest public school in the city located at 12-28th Street, Nazareth village which will be the new home for some 6,000 students of the Cagayan de Oro National High School (CDONHS).
City Engineer Rolando Pacuribot said the two-storey building with eight classrooms took one year and six months to be completed.
The one-hectare school building, worth P120 million is friendly for persons with disabilities students as it has ramps and has own comfort room for each rooms.
Pacuribot said that this is still not enough for the 6,000 students of the CDONHS, thus the students have to use the old cramped school building of the city high school and will still follow the three-shifts style.
But City Mayor Oscar Moreno said by the end of this year, the city with the Department of Education (DepEd), will add more classrooms and a total of 129 classrooms will be owned by the city high this 2017.
“The city high has long endured the lack of classrooms. So they have to experience three shift basis, their learning experience does not exceed four hours. Unsay matun-an ana nila? (What will they learn?) They are not learning enough, they do not get the education they rightfully deserve,” Moreno said.
He said he plans to add more classrooms as the school's population is expected to rise in the next years.
The Moreno administration has built over 400 schools since he assumed in 2013.
Moreno created and expanded the Local School Board (LSB) to help him identify schools and determine funds for it.
In 2015, the previous City Council called the expansion “unjust” saying that they hire “unnecessary” members.
DepEd Chief Administrative officer Shirley Chatto said the expansion of the membership of LSB from seven members to 15 is in line with public policy as provided by Section 20, Article 2 of the 1987 Constitution.
Chatto said the law recognizes public-private partnership, allowing the increased participation of members of the community in local governance.
