PNP anti-illegal drugs campaign credited for drop in crime

Thursday, April 20, 2017

THE police's drive to stamp out the menace of illegal drugs resulted to a decrease in the number of crimes in Northern Mindanao for the first quarter of the year, the Police Regional Office (PRO) said on Wednesday, April 19.

The PRO-Northern Mindanao data showed that crime volume in the region has decreased by 32.5 percent compared to the record for the same period in the last two years.

From January to March, a total of 10,307 crimes were registered in 2015, 6,250 in 2016, and 5,780 for the current period or a decrease of 3.71 percent.

The police said the downtrend was the direct effect of the government's war on drugs, a big part of prevalent crimes such as theft, robbery, physical injury, domestic violence, and rape believed to be influenced by drug abuse.

In the first three months of the year, authorities have also arrested a total of 2,151 persons in the intensified operation against all forms of criminality.

Various police units were able to arrest 887 drug personalities and seized P9.5 million worth of illegal drugs.

For illegal gambling activities, authorities have apprehended 250 persons and confiscated a total of P1.4 million bet money during the 165 operations.

Law enforcement operations also yielded 117 loose firearms from the arrested 119 persons while 22 individuals were apprehended in the campaign against illegal logging.

The police also recovered 32 motorcycles, three vehicles and arrested 15 persons in the drive against carnapping while two members of a carnapping syndicate were neutralized in Lanao del Norte during a hot pursuit operation.

Chief Superintendent Agripino Javier, PRO-Northern Mindanao regional director, ordered the policemen to continue the mandate and tasks to enforce the laws and put criminals behind bars.
