Cagayan de Oro fire leaves 100 workers jobless

Saturday, July 15, 2017

CAGAYAN de Oro City Councilor Reuben Daba assured workers of Palaña Grocers and Hotel Conchita, which was gutted by fire on Thursday, that assistance is underway.

Over 100 employees of the said establishment in Barangay Cogon are temporarily jobless due to the fire that damaged P7 million worth of properties.

Daba, chairman of the City Council's committee on social welfare, said most of the employees are only renting in the city, and source their income from work done in the store and hotel.

He said he will propose to the City Council on Monday, July 17, that food and financial assistance will be provided to the affected employees.

As of Saturday night, security is heightened at the premises of the establishments to prevent looters and to keep the place intact for investigation.

The Bureau of Fire Protection said the establishments will be closed for five days for their probe.

City District Fire Marshal Wilfredo David said they will also investigate the persons who installed the air-conditioning unit which, according to witnesses, the fire started at 10:50 p.m. Thursday.

Firefighter took fifteen hours to put out the blaze.
