NMMC commemorates its centennial year

NORTHERN Mindanao Medical Center (NMMC) commemorates its 100th year celebration Friday, October 20, 2017 at Northern Mindanao Medical Center Capitol Compound, Cagayan de Oro City.

Friday’s event includes Thanksgiving Mass, Press Conference and the launching of NMMC Centennial Wall.

As part of its historical milestone, NMMC remains true to its initial purpose and mission even as it continues to grow and develope.

NMMC was founded and established 100 years ago on October 1, 1917 in the district of Carmen, Cagayan de Oro under the United States colonial government. It aims of furnishing the most in-depth,
accessible, and affordable and quality health care to all of their clients.

NMMC’s Humble Beginnings

Northern Mindanao Medical Center’s humble beginnings can be tracked to house made of wood and nipa structure in Carmen, Cagayan de Oro, Misamis Province when it was still known as Misamis Public Hospital. This hospital had a general ward and a private room and was also equipped with a laboratory.

This small hospital continues to function and operate as a hospital that treats various illnesses and epidemics such as cholera.

As the time passes by, NMMC continues to grow and widen its scoop, facilities and services.

Additional buildings were built in 1956 that increased the total bed capacity of this small hospital.

After 10 years of services from 1956, it was in 1996 that Republic Act 4662 has officially turned Misamis Oriental Provincial Hospital into becoming Northern Mindanao Regional Training Hospital (NMRTH).

This time, this so-called small hospital also became a teaching ground for post-graduate medical interns that offers residency training in various departments.

Its bed capacity had also dramatically increased.

NMMC in its Centennial and Present Year

Northern Mindanao Medical Center at present continues to strive hard to give satisfaction and become a self-reliant and economically practical institution that will provide total quality care in all
service areas for patient satisfaction.

Northern Mindanao Medical Center in its 100 years had been under the leadership of Medical Center Chief Dr. Jose C. Chan.

From its humble beginnings, NMMC now has a total of 1,177 employees, 4 divisions-Medical Division, Nursing Service with Nurses, Midwives, and Nursing attendants, Hospital Operations and Patient Support Service and the Finance Division.

NMMC hospital is now offering residency training in 11 departments which includes-Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Surgery, Obstetrics-Gynecology, Pathology, Radiology, Family and Community Medicine, Anesthesiology, Orthopedics, Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, and Ophthalmology.

Northern Mindanao Medical Center at present is located in an 11,000 square meter area within the Provincial Capitol Compound.

NMMC continues its initial purpose and tradition of service to the all Cagayan de Oro people. It serves not only patients coming from Cagayan de Oro and Misamis Oriental where it is situated but also receives clients from nearby provinces of Bukidnoon, Camiguin, Misamis Oriental, Lanao Del Norte, Zamboanga Del Norte and also Agusan Provinces.

Northern Mindanao Medical Center has new buildings constructed namely Heart and Lung Complex, Oncology Center situated at the southeast corner of the property right across Centrio Mall, New Ward Building located on the northwest section.

This new building will have several medical facilities like OB/Gyne E.R., Pharmacy, Records & Morgue, Operating Room Complex including Central Sterile Services Room (CSSR), OB-Gyne Wards, Pediatric Wards, Medical Wards and Private Rooms.

According to Chief Nurse of NMMC Mrs. Mary Ann C. Pacana, Northern Mindanao Medical Center is trying their best to assist the patients and to attend to their basic needs. She also said that their personnel undergo various trainings with regards to personality development of their personnel to handle the basic needs of their clients.

“We have scheduled orientation personality development skills training every month. Gina-remind namo sila every now and then sa amo monthly meeting, board meetings, mga updates na they should watch out, unsaon nila pakig abi-abi sa publiko, that they should be gentle in taking their patients,” Pacana said.

“Naa jud klaro na sa amo hunahuna na ang quality sa personnel kay mao jud ang pinaka-importante sa organisasyon. Mao nang among professional application naa na siya programa, ang iyang mga programa sa mga training sa value, ang training karon nag gasto ang hospital sa training sa iyang kaugalingong personnel para maayo sila, naa tay front-line service mag train sa ila kung unsa pag atubang sa pasyente,” Dr. Ramon F. Moreno, Chief Medical Professional Staff said.

As Northern Mindanao Medical Center has developed and modernized, it is capable of performing and conducting various open heart surgeries and transplant which includes Open Heart, Bypass Surgery, Kidney and Heart Transplant.

“Ang akong pangandoy kung naa man gali gusto mo avail hinaot unta na musalig sa among serbisyo,” Dr. Moreno said.

The event was graced by Dr. Ramon F. Moreno, Chief Medical Professional Staff; Mary Ann C. Pacana, Chief Nurse of NMMC; Nursing and Medical Service, Hospital Service Patient Support System, Finance
Service and Members of Executive Committee.

“NMMC: Alang sa Tanan-Sukad Kaniadto ug sa Umaabot Pa nga Siglo” is the centennial theme of Northern Mindanao Medical Center.
