Mention of pen seals Sinnott colleagues' trust in video

PAGADIAN CITY -- The mention of a Parker pen had sealed the trust of the colleagues of the abducted Irish priest on the authenticity of the video sent to authorities last Saturday by his abductors.

Allan June Molde, spokesperson of the Zamboanga del Sur Crisis Management Committee (CMC), said that some of the Columban fathers who were shown the video, said that the "red Parker ballpoint pen" as Sinnott described it was given to him by Corazon Mendoza during his 79th birthday in December last year.

"So it is really Fr. Mick on the video," Molde said.

Molde said Mendoza, whom Sinnott also mentioned in the video, is a friend of the Columban missionary community in Pagadian city.

In the video, Sinnott said he was writing the statement he was reading using the pen which Mendoza gave. He read his statement from a yellow pad paper which could also be where he wrote it.

Molde said the pen could be among the few things with Sinnott at the time he was snatched from the convent of the Missionary Society of Saint Columban (MSSC) in Pagadian city last October 11. A few medicines for his heart ailment were also said to be in his possession that time.

When abducted, witnesses said Sinnott was wearing gray pants, black leather shoes, and no shirt.

Molde said Sinnott's delivery on camera of his statement appeared to be done at least twice as another video clip sent by the kidnappers in an MP5 gadget also contained a similar one but with lower quality.

Below is a full transcription of Sinnott's message, taken from the "take two video"-- "October 24, 2009. I, Father Mick Sinnott, am writing this with a small red Parker ballpoint pen given to me by Corazon Mendoza. I was kidnapped on Sunday, October 11, around 7:30 p.m. I am told that the one who is the leader of the group who kidnapped me is Abu Jandal. He is asking for a ransom of two million US dollars. I ask the help, firstly, of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo; the Philippine and Irish governments; and my companions in the Society of Saint Columban; and all other persons who may have pity on me to help so that i can get out of here as soon as possible. we are living here in the open in difficult circumstances. I am still in good health even if I haven't the full medicine. That is all." (Ryan D. Rosauro)
