The Living Spirit

(Below is an article of Ernesto R. Mondoñedo)
“THERE has been a time that we were living in a kind of slave society. That was during the colonial years under Spain and the United States. We are living now in a democratic society. In a democracy men have rights and responsibilities.”
Faced with an ailing patient, a physician does not cure the symptoms. He studies them in an effort to pinpoint the sickness for which he institutes the cure.
The preceding article should have convincingly demonstrated the lack of the spirit of common unity or community spirit, to be the root of man’s problems. Its generation has to be the logical solution to the problem of today’s society.
In effect, the stated solution reduces the multifarious problems of the modern world to the more manageable problem of developing the system of remedies or program for generating community spirit. At that point, it will help to picture how community spirit is generated. The next article will demonstrate what it can do for the problem of the world.
There are four possible relationships that two or more persons can enter into. A member of the group may lord it over the others -- a relationship of (1) dominion. Or he may choose to be lorded over by the others; (2) slavery. He may choose to pool his resources with the others for a common undertaking; (3) commerce. Finally he may decide to generate with the others a common bond of love or unity; a relationship of (4) communion.
The first two are utterly unworthy of human dignity. The third can be useful to them in so far as it stays within the parameter of just and equitable trade. The fourth is where the members of the group owe themselves the discipline of fruitful dialogue in order for them to acquire the ability and the will to 1) analyze for the needs that cause the problems among them; 2) take stock of their available resources; and 3) program the cultivation and application of their resources to satisfy their self-discovered needs with a minimum of waste.
This is what the human spirit or soul would direct the empowered parts of the human body to do together to relieve the stomach of the pangs of hunger. This is what a neighborhood without a spirit of community would not do for its distressed members. This is humanity’s fitting witness to its likeness to God and to its members’ glorious heritage of being sons and daughters of God.
God is infinite love. Its nature is to share or communicate its infinite perfection from eternity unto eternity. Its Word, or eternal communication of itself, carries an identity of a generated person, or Son, who is as distinct from the person of generator; as Son is, from Father. The Son, being an infinitely perfect likeness of his Father, is also infinite and is also the one God. Two infinites are an impossibility.
God the Father and God the Son, being two infinitely perfect persons, must relate to each other with an infinitely perfect love between them. They cannot communicate their infinite perfection to one another. They are each already infinitely perfect. But they can do so to their relationship. This they do from eternity and thus enspirit their relationship into their bond of unity or love: the eternally spirited person of the Holy Spirit.
Their spirit has to be also as perfect and timeless as them and carries its own identity of ‘Gift’ which is as distinct from the separate identities of Father and Son as givers of the gift. The Divine Trinity is, therefore, the reality of infinite unity in diversity of infinite persons. It is the exemplar of a good human society which is defined as a unity in diversity of persons. Thus, by building a good human society, human beings witness to their being images and sons and daughters of God.
By God’s design, the common spirit of love among his people makes us fit temples of the Holy Spirit, singly and as communities. Christ really means us to be perfect as his heavenly Father is perfect. God affords us with no greater fulfillment than to pick up with Him in Christ the pieces of humanity’s shattered future.
Together, and through the Holy Spirit, we participate in the power of God in Christ to rid our world of the ugly sores of sin. This, by God’s design, we do best as Christian communities, not as individual Christians.
Our business corporations must show their responsibility towards society and our fellowmen by paying just wages and benefits to their employees.
Not only that, they should share their wealth by voluntarily giving donations for health care, housing etc. of the underprivileged of society. If they don’t give voluntarily, they should be taxed so that the government can channel this money to the benefits of the poor.
The ideal, however, is that we the people in civil society share our wealth with the underprivileged. We are the government and it is our responsibility to look after the needs of our brothers and sisters in the community. The Love of God should be the common Spirit that must inspire us.
