THE time has come when the country should adjust to its modern surrounding or atmosphere and its politicians and leaders should be appropriately educated.
We should throw to the trash cans of our old system of politics where the qualifications of our leaders are just being adult and able to read and write. It is no longer appropriate that one must be an adult and able to read and write in order to lead because the country has revolved to the 21st century standard of necessities or requirements. We must have leaders who are equipped with college education. In the first place, what are our colleges and universities for if we cannot utilize its graduates to lead us?
In other countries in the world, their leaders are properly educated. It is only in our place that we allow anyone even drivers of jeepneys to run for president of the country as long as one is an adult and knows how to read and write.
This is totally ridiculous and inappropriate in our time now. These qualifications should be in history and we should amend the requirement of our constitution on the matter of qualifications. Or better still inquire from Southeast Asian countries on their leaders. Our country is lagging behind, continuously poor and ignorant because many of our leaders are ignorant and less educated. But they know how to buy votes.
We have so many professionals in our midst who graduated from first class colleges and universities like the UP, Ateneo, UST, UE, UM, MLQ Universities and a lot others who turned out first class professionals many of them even board and bar topnotchers but are living in the dark and unrecognized because they lack the money to run for public office. If we can have these professionals lead us, I am very sure our country will move faster and be at par with foreign leaders.
I do not have to mention names but if you inquire from the professional regulation board and the Bar Association of the Philippines, you will be able to get the names of people who could be top leaders but some of them just plant bananas in their towns because of lack of facilities to get airborne. I hope our government should realize this situation and make some amendments in our constitution where only those qualified to lead can enter into the game of politics.
High school graduate should not be a qualification anymore for the presidency or even for mayor. They should be in the Parent Teachers Association only and let them keep quiet.
The world has grown so much. It has modernized. Modern matters are on the surface of the planet and yet we still sleep to our old ways of utilizing less educated people to become congressmen when we know that this position needs to file bills and argue them into law.
What happens is we produce lousy laws, or duplicates of old laws and other faulty features of what are coming out in Congress. We should now turn the table and let our highly educated professionals hold power and utilize their brains.
