The opportunist-A A +A
I have issues
Thursday, October 24, 2013
THE usual and expected aftermath in disaster response is cooperation, people banding together to form rebuilding initiatives, everyone seemingly intent of putting buck the normalcy of life, so it comes as a shocker, and a huge sense of disappointment when we still have opportunists lurking around even in a situation that calls for immediate assistance.
As the Philippine Red Cross confirmed that the Mayor of Maribojoc town in Bohol halted relief operations because he wanted the goods to be distributed by the Red Cross to be coursed through him, this isn’t a only a dagger of betrayal to the cause of relief operations, but comes as a reminder that opportunists still plague our politics, and they cannot be without their own agenda, and sometimes their greedy claws just come out without them noticing it. But in this case the whole town of Maribojoc stood witness to this act, tragedy after tragedy so they say.
But what was the mayor’s intention? As an elected official, and one tasked to represent the entire town’s behalf, we might be pushing it too hard to say he did this right of greed, let’s give this a second to waive the benefit of the doubt card, could he out of obligation wanted to stop the operations because he didn’t know about it? And perhaps as mayor wanted to help organize? But that doesn’t seem right because Red Cross already reported this plan of action to him. So maybe it might have been because he personally wanted to lead the relief operation too, to say, help out directly in the distribution, but if this were the case why would he need to do so? Doesn’t he trust the experience and expertise of the Red Cross? There are many ways for him to have participated without stifling the flow of distributing necessary goods to his displaced constituents.
To me, this seems clear, that the circumstance demanded a much more respectable approach, that the circumstance demanded a much humane approach, even if he had issues with the said operation he shouldn’t have prioritized them over the needs of his constituents, we can’t say for certain why he did what he did, and this may go out to other elected officials who intend to do the same, but the message is clear, this is not the time for you or for anyone else, this is time to rebuild and replenish, a time to assist those who need assistance.
This is not the time to be greedy; to get an opportunity to build on your image, especially because elections are around the corner, there is never such a time where we can artificially build on our reputation amidst crisis, even after it, the Mayor of Maribojoc was no better than a thief, anything more and he could be no better than a murderer if people starved to death because of his greed. Opportunists, they are everywhere, even amidst an earthquake.
