BARANGAY Bugo will hold a three-man team chess tourney on Saturday and Sunday (May 12-13) at its covered court, which already hosted a number of successful tournaments in the past.
Event coordinator Jokorn Maestrado said the two-day chessfest is exclusive only for Class B players with the team champion out to receive the P10,000 top purse.
Second and third placers will get P6,000 and P4,000, respectively, with fourth and fifth finishers out to settle for P2,000 and P1,000.
Each of the board medalists will pocket P500.
Organizers, headed by Barangay Bugo chair Raul Aleria, have encouraged participants to bring chess sets and clocks for their own convenience.
"Timing sab ni nga event in as far as creating awareness among the advocates of the 64-square-board game kay nagkaduol na sab ang pinakadako nga chess event sa dakbayan," said arbiter Lorenzo "Jun" Cuizon, referring to the 1st Dongkoy Emano Mayor's Cup inter-barangay chessfest, which is set to open on May 18 in SM City.
The Mayor's Cup, which has competitions for open and age-group brackets, expects around 400 woodpushers that are bonafide residents of Cagayan de Oro.
"With no entry fee unya naay mga prizes ingon man free shirts nga ipanghatag, we're optimistic to reach our 400-field target," said Cuizon, who will assist Maestrado in running the show in the village. (LLS)
