JOHNNEL Balquin rebounded from his mediocre performance in the 1st Mayor Dongkoy Emano Cup by winning the just-concluded 23rd Barangay Taft Mindanao Open chess tournament in Surigao City.
The 30-something Balquin, a resident trainer at MisOr's Capitol Chess Park, defeated National Master Rustum Tolentino in the 8th and final round to emerge as solo champion with a score of 7 points.
Balquin got P30,000 for his feat.
Former Sun.Star Cebu sports editor Giovannie Tabada enjoyed superior tiebreak points over fellow 6 pointers in “back-to-CdeO" Nazario Ubanan and homeground bets Marcialito Penera and Reynaldo Gempero to bag the runner-up honor.
"Suwerte ang pagbalik ni Ubanan sa Cagayan de Oro kay medyo patsada ang dagan sa iyang chess," Capitol Chess Club caretaker Loloy Duman-ag said of the former Letran stalwart whose family hails in Barangay Consolacion.
Rounding up the top-15 finishers in the cash-rich event organized by the Barangay Council of Taft with Kagawad Noel "Payok" Viajar serving as tournament director in the company of arbiters NA Lorenzo P. Cuizon Jr., FA Marven Ruelan, Salvador Asedilla, Tito Mante and Cris Morales were FM Tolentino, Henry Lopez, NM Rommel Ganzon, Harrison Maamo, Basilio Pandan Jr., NM Ernesto Fernandez, Cosain Magarang, NM Cedric Magno, Silverio Abasolo and Fame Fazon who all garnered 5 points each.
