FIRED up by its grand opening in Cagayan de Oro Friday, various events in Milo Little Olympics Mindanao 2012 will go into full throttle today at Don Gregorio Pelaez Sports Center.

The city’s main sporting hub, which boasts of rubberized track oval and improved facilities, will host the centerpiece events in swimming and athletics as well as football, sepak takraw, tennis, and volleyball.

“We’re here with a common goal. And that’s to work hard together to bring the best of the region in trying to produce national athletes in the future,” said Misamis Oriental Governor Oscar S. Moreno in his inspirational talk after the words of welcome by Robbie de Vera, Milo Sports Executive Chairman of the National Executive Board, and the Oath of Amateurism conducted by Gabbie Akila Boloto, Most Outstanding Athlete in the 2010-2011 Milo Little Olympics National Finals.

The Misamis Oriental General Comprehensive High School’s Canteen at second floor and new building rooftop will be the venues for scrabble and chess.

Meanwhile, the basketball gyms of Liceo de Cagayan University and Corpus Christi High School will each accommodate taekwondo and gymnastics competitions, respectively.

Some lawn tennis matches will be played at the Nazareth Lawn Tennis Club and table tennis at the Car Park building of SM City.

As expected, the hugely populated public school in the city -- MOGCHS -- delivered the loudest cheers on cloudy Friday’s opening ceremony that saw thousands of spectators filling up the Pelaez Center’s main grandstand to the rafters.

“Time and again, I’m very happy nga walay paglubad successful gihapon atong pagbukas sa 25th Milo Little Olympics for Mindanao schools,” event organizer Megdonio “Megs” Llamera told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro.

Liceo de Cagayan University, however, shone the brightest in the final selection of Miss Milo Little Olympics 2012 as it won anew the secondary crown with Nicole Inovero, now in 3rd year level, duplicating the feat of fellow Licean Katrina Naguita who bagged the title last year.

City Central School, recently befell by a costly fire incident, has something to cheer when its own bet was adjudged Miss Milo Little Olympics 2012 in the elementary level. (LLS)
