SPC Sharks win 17-under crown in 8TH COSAA Basketball-A A +A

THEY’RE not supposed to be there, as pundits would say. But surprise 17-under finalists Southern Philippine College and St. Mary’s School showed too much class in closing out the 2012 Cosaa (Cagayan de Oro Schools Athletic Association) basketball tournament at the Xavier University gym here.
After carving out a monumental upset win over defending champion XU Junior Crusaders in the semifinal round, the SMS Fiats of coach Rene Ilogon looked like they’re heading to break into the championship plateau when they built an 11-point lead early in the third quarter behind the inspiring play of Jason Cabrales off the backcourt.
Unfortunately, it was in the same quarter that the SMS dribblers lost steam in the face of the SPC Sharks’ crippling defense that paved the way to a convincing 93-80 victory by the experienced wards of coach Rey “Bulldog” Lubguban.
With SMS center OJ Redondo suffering from cramps and starting pointguard Cabrales hobbled by four fouls, the SPC Sharks had no trouble in overhauling the SMS lead as the fivesome of Humbert Jay Duterte, Jan Luigie Arcay, Mark Roa, Clifford Bachinicha and Jhon Mark Olape went on to dominate the game up to the fourth and final quarter.
“The boys never rested in pressuring SMS with an all-out defense. Ilang problema kay wala na silay second five nga maka-relibo mao nga gikapoy na sila,” said Ian Angara, who along with SPC sports coordinator Marcelo Reambonanza, provided coach Lubguban an able support on the bench.
Coach Ilogon later told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro that though the Cosaa finals was such a very enriching experience, the results never failed to give him some sleepless nights.
“Losing two championships games in a row for one single day is certainly not easy. But still we must be contented sa dako kaayong improvement nga nahitabo sa team. From being called as the whipping boys four years ago, nahimo na’ng championship caliber among school sa Cosaa basketball,” Ilogon said.
Host Xavier University earlier won the 14-under plum against St. Mary’s, 65-50 and the 12-under title by rout opposite Capitol University, 92-25.
“We lost grip of the 17-under and tertiary crowns in similar situation nga mora’g amo na gyod unta. Pero oks lang gihapon, ang importante nga adunay lesson nga matun-an ang mga bata adto nga experience nila sa playoff round,” said Arvin Martinez of the Xavier University’s athletic department office.
Also fortifying the SPC’s first taste of championship glory are Renz Norwin Catiil, Benz Sagarino, James Gabriel Guangco, Paul Jireh Escosura, Ian Hebia, Carl Rubin, Ian Love Casino and Ronnel Nob.
