CCS Knights withstand Oro Christian challenge in chessfest

CORPUS Christi and Little Me School dominated the chess event of the 1st PBESAA (Private Basic Education Schools Athletic Association) Meet here, even as the Oro Christian Grace School (OCGS) bets provided them a big scare up to the playoff round.
The CCS Knights bagged six of the coveted eight slots to the City Quadrangular Meet with elementary players Vanessa Magno and Andrie John Felisilda overcoming tough matches as well as secondary counterparts Tristan Ibaoc, Jeff Russell Rivera, Nicole Anne Rivera and Monique Rodriguez.
Little Me’s Ronald Canino and Christine delos Reyes grabbed the remaining seats in elementary level of the PBESAA chess competition held at the 4th floor of Pilgrim Christian College building last weekend.
Like Ibaoc and Rivera, Corpus Christi’s lady tandem of Rivera and Rodriguez withstood the odds in the crucial phase of the two-day chessfest. But not after a nightmarish challenge offered by Oro Christian’s first year high school student Chelsea Uy.
Unbeaten in four-straight matches, the glass-wearing Uy needed just a draw in the fifth round against Rivera to win the high school girls’ championship on board one. And though she faltered, the inexperienced Uy could still bring her stuff to the next level if she won her last playoff duel with board 2 winner Rodriguez.
Again, the Corpus Christi’s vast experience prevailed.
“Pero next year, basin Oro Christian na ang mangharos kay unknown ilang mga players pero nakaaway na sila karon sa championship round,” said the mother of Rodriguez.
At least three of the lean Oro Christian contingent finished the PBESAA chess tourney with medals to show.
The talented daughter of Engr. Nelson Uy and Lailane Yu got the silver on board one, while elementary compatriots Lyle Uy (Chelsea’s younger brother) and Emmanuel Troy Li, nephew of OCGS assistant principal Jeanette Li, brought home a bronze and a silver each on boards 1 and 2.
Corpus Christi’s Kennard Ibaoc and Honey Grace Baclayo got knocked out in the elementary’s playoff round. They settled for silvers in their respective board assignments along with Jana del Rosario of Bright Rock School and Krishia Galanida of Kong Hua High School. LLS
