UNDEFEATED men’s open division campaigners Bulua and Iponan teams seek semifinal seats in today’s resumption of the 2nd Mayor Dongkoy Emano Cup Inter-Barangay basketball tournament at Barangay Bulua gym, Cagayan de Oro City.

The Arjie Mendoza-led Bulua and the Junjun Daanoy-starred Iponan, which both finished the elimination round with a similar 4-0 record, face Barangay 21 and Gusa in separate quarterfinal matches starting at 5 p.m.

“The crowd expects them to live up to their top billings, though upset is also possible kay palaban sab `ning Gusa ug Barangay 21,” Mayor’s Cup program head Gerry “Boboy” Sabal told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro.

Barangay Iponan chair “Lady Gaga” Brellita, however, took the youthful Gusa team’s challenge in his usual funny gesture, even sharing a joke that Misamis Oriental second district Rep. Yevgeny “Bambi” Emano and assistant tournament director Chinglai Casiño can only laugh with.

“Worried na kayo ilang mga dagway pero sa amo easy lang,” Brellita said, adding “Ang ako lang concern nga dili madaut ilang mga dagway unya dili ma injured akong mga babies.”

Getting a little bit serious, Brellita declared: “Ang amo lang sa Iponan team niining Mayor’s Cup nga every season makasulod lang `mi sa Xavier University gym.”

The man-mountain Marco Sabal, who consistently leads Batch `99 to the championship in the ongoing Xavier University High School inter-batch tourney, plus the guard-forward tandem of Jet Yaranon and Bee Datinguinoo will be Iponan’s logical threat in its semifinal bid.

On Sunday (Oct. 7), the five-win streak owner Camaman-an will figure in a keenly-awaited tussle with defending champion Lapasan at 6:30 pm.

“We hurdled the challenge of Pagatpat by 2 points through the heroic play of Ramil Tagupa, pero bug-at kayo ang sunod nga challenge kay Camaman-an among kontra,” said Jongjong Vallecero, even as he expressed optimism the Lapasan Warriors still stand a good chance of beating the wards of Camaman-an chair Domitillo Acenas and coach Diding Rivera.

In the lower age level, Barangay Kauswagan will be given twice the chance to advance to the semifinal round against Cugman (2 pm) for the 14-under division and Puerto (3:30 p.m.) for the 18-under category.
