BARANGAY Camaman-an, which posted the best record in the elimination round, upended the title-retention bid of Lapasan in just the quarterfinals of the 2nd Mayor Emano Cup Inter-Barangay basketball on Sunday at the Bulua gym.
With the wrecking bull Abato scoring heavily from inside, Clavel Claunan, Tamparong and the rest of coach Diding Rivera’s wards pouring their best in the season’s most-awaited match, Camaman-an dealt the Ramil Tagupa-led Lapasan a 104-96 loss to advance in the men’s open division’s semifinal round.
“It was a bitter end for Lapasan nga known kayo sa ilang team-work play maskin dili kayo sila dagko. Grabe sab ang mga inside moves ni Abato wala nila mapugngi,” tournament head Gerry “Boboy” Sabal told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro.
Last season’s runner-up Iponan and fellow unbeaten Bulua also made it to the semis round on Saturday, edging Gusa (86-78) and Barangay 21 (94-87), respectively.
In the 18-under division, Iponan was heavily-favored in their match against Patag which turned the table in a shocking 103-97 victory.
Joining Patag in the semis are Kauswagan after a hairline 90-89 win over Puerto and Balulang, a 93-82 conqueror of Barangay 17.
Kauswagan, however, lost to Cugman (57-59) in the 14-under category which saw Barangay 14 edging Barangay 26, 94-91.
The semifinal round will start on Oct. 12 (a Friday) at same venue, pitting Patag versus Kauswagan in the 18-under bracket and Iponan against Camaman-an in the men’s open.
