2nd Mayor’s Cup Finals: Reyes-led Patag falls short in its 18-U title bid

BARANGAY Camaman-an on Sunday slammed host Bulua, 103-82 to arrange a title-showdown with last season’s runner-up Iponan in men’s open division of the 2nd Mayor Dongkoy Emano Cup Inter-Barangay basketball tournament at the Bulua gym here.
With Bulua’s tallest guy on the floor Arjay Mendoza still reeling from a hurting ankle during their losing match with Iponan last Saturday, Camaman-an’s huge foursome of J.R. Abato, Alvin Claunan, Julius Hinampas and Richard Kwong took turns in wrecking havoc from inside as the sweet shooting Kurt Pabua kept the fire from afar to preserve their unbeaten slate going to the finals.
A triple-tie ensued in 18-under category and though the Paul Anthony Reyes-led Patag defeated Balulang in nerve-wracking fashion, the latter still gained the right to face Kauswagan for the title by virtue of a higher tiebreak points using the quotient system.
“Barangay Patag’s 18-under squad outrightly becomes the crowd favorite for the obvious reason nga makalingaw kayo ilang No.9 nga player (Reyes). Luckily, for Balulang and Kauswagan they ended up with superior tiebreak results,” tournament head Gerry “Boboy” Sabal told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro.
The championship games will be slated on Saturday (Oct. 20) at the Xavier University gym.
First to take the floor at 2 pm is the titular match between Barangay 14 and Cugman for the 14-under class, followed by the exhibition game pitting the Association of Barangay Captains (ABC) and the Oro Media.
At 4 p.m., Kauswagan and Balulang will dispute the 18-under crown before the friendly match between the Congress All Stars and the CDO Executives.
Headlining the nightcap at 7 p.m. is the keenly-awaited match between open division finalists Camaman-an and Iponan.
"Natuman ra gyod ang pangarap sa among kapitana nga makabalik mi'g tunob sa XU gym. Grabe among paningkamot kay maayo kaayo siya mo-alaga sa amo palangga kaayo `mi niya," one Iponan cager was overheard as saying.
Sabal's trusted buddy Chinglai Casiño said the public can watch the championship games for free or with no entrance fee.
"Like in the first season, t-shirts, cellphones and basketballs will also be raffled to the Mayor's Cup fans," added Casiño.
