Friday, January 4, 2013
WITH best forward Dan Audris Lagbas, best pointguard and most valuable player (MVP) Rhys Jefferson Flores combining for 30 points, Barangay Balulang easily defeated Barangay Agusan, 90-78, to become back-to-back champion in 18-under division of the Mayor Dongkoy Emano Cup Inter-Barangay Christmas basketball tournament concluded recently at the Xavier University gym.
Playing with just an eight-man roster, Balulang did well in avoiding costly turnovers as it turned into the hot hands of Lagbas and Flores who sizzled for 30 and 20 points apiece to turn back the challenge of Agusan.
Dario Piatti and Red Louis Cachuela also contributed for 13 and 11 points, respectively, as Balulang effectively countered offensively the equally productive efforts of Ravidas, Calang, Baluran, Manatad and Gontiñas who all scored in double-digit figures for Agusan’s losing cause.
“Winning a back-to-back championship comes with so much responsible work ethics and commitment. In fact, we decided to sacrifice our Christmas vacation to be able to practice seriously. Of course, the biggest challenge was eight players lang ang available during the finals kay injured si Marc (Malferrari),” Balulang coach Arvin Martinez told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro.
Also in the forefront of Balulang’s second title romp are Sam Elijah Velez, Ric Rafael Palomar, Francis Jabines, Christian Diputado, Jimbo Fuentes and Neil William Malagar.
“For my best coach award, this will not be possible without my players’ effort and co-coaches especially to Dundee Velez who steered our first championship in my absence, my brother Brande Martinez and, of course, to my very hardworking first assistant Kuya Jun,” further said Martinez, who acknowledged Kagawad Jay Acaylar from Lower Balulang for his vital role in forming the team.
Meanwhile, the Oro Press of team manager Gerry Gorit repeated over the Association of Barangay Council (ABC), 102-100 during the preliminary match.
“Dili na gyod matawag og tsamba kay nidaug gihapon ta nga wala atong duha ka dagko,” said Gorit referring to the huge tandem of mediafest MVP Wesley Daculiat of ABS-CBN and Ariel Hinampas of Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro.
Showing up for the Oro Press’ thrilling win over the Nando Abapo and Binky Beja-led ABC are Lito Rulona, Popoy Yburan, Hernan Abecia, Gerry Camugao, Rene Abris, Ronald Rufin, Loui Maliza, Lynde Salgados, Karlo Alcordo, Gil Banaag and Gorit.
