RODNEY Opada of Aurora, Zamboanga del Sur came here to consider a job at Centrio Mall.
Little did he know that his chess talent would propel him to winning the 1st Rep. Juliette Uy Fiesta chess tournament last Dec. 12 in Villanueva town, Misamis Oriental.
“Trabaho lang maong nia siya sa Cagayan de Oro. Duol raman ang Villanueva nidula nalang pud siya,” arbiter Jun Cuizon said of Opada.
Winning five rounds and yielding just a draw, Opada bagged the P5,000 top purse plus trophy of the two-day chessfest. Father Vic Arellano, Jun Tisocon and Joseph Parmisano all finished with identical 5 points to bring home P1,500 each.
Also making it to the prize circle were Ralph Dalauta, Rey Laput and Rolando Gomonit with 4.5 points apiece.
“Bibo nga torneyo walay nagmahay. Tanan participants nakapamista, tanan peldiro gihatagan og tag-100 matag usa,” said tournament director Nilo Abroguena. (LLS)
