‘Yolanda’ caging in Oro a success-A A +A
Wednesday, December 18, 2013
IT WAS just a “one night stand” affair, but the Cagayan de Oro Bankers Club, Inc. quickly delivered a meaningful assist to the victims of super typhoon Yolanda.
“Although we organized the event in a hurry, we were able to give P20,000 worth of check as aid for Yolanda victims,” said Jessie Tolod, who along with Mafel Gatchalian, Linda Costales and Erol Gabe, comprised the board of directors of the Oro Bankers Club headed by Erlquin Lim.
The three-game fanfare held last Dec. 14 at the Xavier University gym here saw the Mayor Oscar Moreno-led Oro Executives drubbed the Oro Bankers Executives, 80-71 in the opening match.
“It’s fun to play basketball with the honorable mayor of Cagayan de Oro. His mere presence alone is very encouraging. In fact, we appreciate the mayor’s effort especially on his so-called hapsay program. Ma-improve lang ang paghipos sa basura nga medyo backward ang development okay na gyod kaayo atong siyudad,” later said Alvin Pastor in a good-natured ribbing with this writer.
The fancied tandem of Stephen Go and Marvin Neri, who earlier powered the Gray Hounds to a titular win in the just-concluded 3rd Oro Bankers hoopfest, tried to sustain their winning ways in the second game of the night with the CBDO All Stars in dark jersey. But the Anton Pabillore-skippered CBDO All Stars Light team had Jet Yaranon, Pasio Valencia and Jojo Varga all kept on hitting from outside and the huge foursome of Ryan Arpay, James Simon, Taboclaon and Saosal crowding the lanes for the rivals en route to a convincing 78-63 finish.
In the main tiff, host Xavier University Senior Crusaders of coach Arvin Martinez quickly spelled revenge against the Capitol University (CU) Stallions of coach Jonas Molawan.
Facing the very same squad who eliminated them in the cash-rich Tagoloan Open basketball tournament, the Crusaders banked on their familiarity of the XU gym to post a mind-boggling 40-12 lead and never looked back.
“We’re so grateful to Mr. Padilla and the XU gym management for their support in our fund-raising activity (A Game For A Cause). And we’re looking forward to more fruitful events with them in the future,” Tolod further told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro.
