HER older brothers and sister--all top-notch chessers in the locality-- 'little princess' Gwyneth Amper finally had her star shone in the just-held kiddies chess tournament at SM Mall-Cagayan de Oro.
The younger Amper, whose parents are both working at Misamis Oriental General Comprehensive High School (MOGCHS), scored a spectacular perfect 7 points to emerge champion in 14-under division of the pre-christmas tourney dubbed as ôFrans Leo Hanson Cupö Open Chess Tournament.
“Niliwat gyod sa mga kuya (Ian Edward and Edcel John) ug iyang ate (Christine Ivy),” observed Ralph Dalauta, himself a multi-titled Class B campaigner.
Michael Simbre and Calvin Talines tallied identical 6 points to finish second and third after the Bucholz tiebreaker with Lanie Macababat and fellow 5.5-pointer Francis Labis settling at fourth and fifth places, respectively.
“It was a memorable win for Gwyneth kay na-prove sab sa bata nga pwede diay mo-dominate in chess ang babae kontra sa mga lalake,” said Leo Dinglasan, who assisted Fide arbiter Jun Cuizon in running the show along with Woman National Master Cecilia Cuizon and Franklin Porras.
Tournament director Benoni Wabe said close to 100 aspiring kiddies from the different schools in the city have participated in the two-day chessfest highlighted by the equally-interesting open category.
“We’re so grateful to the management of SM Mall for helping us promote chess development by way of providing us the free use of venue. It will surely inspire us to organize more chess events in the near future,” Wabe further told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro.
Rounding up the top-10 finishers were Prince Edward Zacarias, Glenn Escarda, Kenneth Caingin, Gwen Escarda and Jemima Japay.
Those who made it to the top-20 were Althea Nicole Borres, Cressler Gabing, El Winze Balangao, Gillen Gomez, Jay Boy Duman-ag, Charles Gabing, Angela Lapore, John Labis, Shaina Garcia and Bridget Mulawan.
