Ballpals Falcons in triple-overtime win-A A +A
Saturday, December 28, 2013
HEADING to the club’s Christmas ballgames party on Sunday, Ballpals Falcons survived the first ever triple-overtime drama in the ongoing Ballpals playoff tournament at the covered court of Barangay 24 in Cagayan de Oro City.
Despite the absence of acrobatic guard Boning Biongcog, the Rattle Snakes made life difficult for the youth-laden Falcons in the longest match that transpired in the city’s most popular ballclub.
“Labad ang ulo sa officiating kay gipaningot gyod sila’g dagan. But it’s worth the wait to produce a new record in club history kay talagsa ra mahitabo na’ng triple-overtime,” said club president “Baby James” Abucejo, who earlier knocked in three booming treys for the Mustangs’ losing effort (51-49) against the last team entry, Eagles.
“Actually, pabibo lang kay kulang ang Mustangs. Thrilling kaayo nga dula pero ila gyod ‘to sa Eagles,” said Abucejo, the willing host of the club’s Christmas party (December 29) tonight at his newly-built house in P.N. Roa Subdivision in Canitoan.
“Baseball Pass” Ulyssis Romulo and Junjun Daanoy each fired a buzzer beating three-pointer to force a third-overtime play for the heavily undermanned Mustangs.
But it turned out to be Romulo and company’s last hurrah against the equally-depleted Falcons fronted by STI varsity stalwarts Bodie Tamparong and Ken Salado whose inside drives had set the tone for Dan Martinez’s game-winning outside bombing.
“Unom ra ‘mi nag-nose bleed pa gyod among fastbreaker (Ian Dablio). Maayo na lang nanulod ang tres ni DanMarz kapoy na kaayo ‘ming tanan,” Falcons team manager Lolong Cabeltes later told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro.
Other games saw the Tigers edging the Wizards, 69-66; the Skyhawks in 66-56 victory over the Petronas Dragons and the Cobras’ win by default over the Tamaraws.
Sunday’s matches pit the Eagles against the Rattle Snakes, the Red Lions opposite the Tamaraws, the Mustangs versus the Wizards and the Tigers’ much-awaited showdown with the battle-scarred Petronas.
