AND what a better way to end the season for the mighty Green CdeO Eagles basketball team.

Representing Barangay Iponan, the Green Eagles of Kagawad Dondon Allorin and Larry Edrolin won the civic division title of the two-day Christmas league in Barra, Opol, Misamis Oriental over the weekend.

Making it to the finals after a thrilling victory over Team Vamenta, the Green Eagles figured out literally in a roller-coaster ride before overcoming the hard-fighting Opol Eagles, 66-63 in the championship round.

“Daghan among error pero mao sab sa kontra. Will to win lang unya medyo nipabor ang luck sa amo,” said team-playing coach Ulyssis Romulo of the Green dribblers’ season-ending breather against their conqueror in this year’s basketball tournament of the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Cagayan de Oro at Barangay Bulua gym.

In the absence of Eagles hoopfest MVP Eric Razalo, former COC varsity mainstay Cyrus Diango effectively manned the Opol Eagles’ backcourt play that resulted to a final half breakthrough by the host squad.

But Waway Arocha, among the Green Eagles new recruits this year, made a strong move on defense with his shot blocking savvy, then fished crucial fouls along the way to settle the issue on the free-throw line.

“Dili perfect pero kinasingkasing gyod `to nako nga effort sa freethrow line. Grasyahan lang nga enough ra gyod nga nakapadaug sa team,” Arocha said.

The clean-shaven Arocha and Tata Bajao top-scored the Green side with identical 15 points each as fellow newcomer Lolong Bequilla, Agapito Mercado and Gerwin Marcojos added 14, 10 and 9 markers apiece for Iponan’s cause also augmented by Jun “Con-Air” Gomez, Dondon Ratunil, Arnel Baba, Wilmer Lico, Dr. Wilboure Neri and Lynde Salgados.

Opol Eagles, meanwhile, got 22 and 11 points each from Rey Lugsanay and Dindo Dunque, while Diango and Rex Armojallas doled out 10 markers, respectively, for the homeground team’s runner-up finish.

The Green CdeO Eagles, still in hunt for a six-straight win (as of press time) in Kolambog, Lapasan caging, will be in Talakag, Bukidnon today for a so-called Legal and Dental Mission.

They will also play an exhibition game with the LGU team of Talakag.

“Bibo alegre ang Green Eagles on December 28 kay after sa Talakag mission the induction of NMR-1 regional officers and turnover ceremony will be held then at the Golden Stallion Suites in Nazareth, Cagayan de Oro,” Gomez told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro. (LLS)
