EASILY one of the best rapid players in the city, Jokorn “Alamid” Maestrado hanged tough in the upset-marred 2nd Congresswoman Juliette T. Uy and Mayor Julio T. Uy Open Chess Tournament.
Maestrado dodged the upset-axe that befell on National Masters Levi Mercado and Rustum Tolentino then edged fellow 6-pointer Silverio Abasolo in the Bucholz tiebreak to bring home the P5,000 top purse of the day-long tourney held in Villanueva town, Misamis Oriental on June 16, 2014.
“It’s very unfortunate nga daghan kusog sa Class A level ang nanga-upset including NMs Mercado and Tolentino who both decided to withdraw with still two rounds to go,” arbiter Jun Cuizon told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro.
Sharing third to 7th places with identical 5.5 points were Jeriel Manlimbana, Ronnie Pujas, Jhonnel Balquin, Rey Uy and Elias Balase. At eight to 13th spots with 5 points to show were Basilio Pandan, Aljie Cantonjos, Zacarias Duman-ag, Danilo Obeso, Audie Abrea and Renan Cantilado.
Those who made it to the top-20 circle include Rodney Opada, Abdul Halil Abdullah, William Reintegrado, Edward Tare, Loloy Patriana, Nazario Ubanan and Lyndon Lumancas.
Over P20,000 in total cash prizes plus trophies were awarded to the winners in the Villanueva chessfest that attracted close to 100 participants.
