THE quiet barangay of Tablon, where the famed Nestle Philippines factory nestles, will hold its First Barangay Tablon Chess Team Open, Inter-Purok and Blitz Chess Tournament on July 25-27.
To be played at Tablon Elementary School, the three-day chessfest –serving as major highlight of Tablon’s 30th Barangay Day and Nutrition Month Celebration—offers close to P50,000 in total cash prizes for the lucky winners in the Open, Inter-Purok and Blitz categories.
“Permiro pa kini nga mahitabo sa Tablon mao nga gi-todo na ni father,” said chief arbiter Lorenzo “Jun” Cuizon, referring to Rev. Fr. Vic E. Arellano.
A strong chess player himself, Fr. Arellano will act as tournament director of the keenly-awaited event sponsored by the Barangay Council of Tablon through its sports-loving chairman Romeo R. Bacarro.
The three-man team competition stakes P15,000, P10,000 and P5,000 plus trophies to the top-three winners with the fourth and fifth placers out to receive P3,000 and P2,000 each. Individual gold medallists on boards one, two and three will be given P500 apiece.
For the Inter-Purok, the top-three finishers will be awarded P3,000, P2,000 and P1,000, respectively, also with trophies.
“After the team tourney and inter-purok naa tay seven-round blitz challenge para bibo before the awarding ceremony,” Cuizon further told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro.
The blitz champion and runner-up will get P1,000 and P700 with the next best three performers out to settle for P500, P300 and P200 each.
