FRIENDS of the late Roldan Lagbas will remember the former Cagayan de Oro College varsity standout-turned Misamis Oriental Provincial Board member by playing basketball games on July 26 in time of the local cage icon’s first death anniversary.
Venue of the so-called “Pangkoy Memorial Cup” hoopfest will be the Nazareth gym.
“This Friendship Games will serve as a reminder on the case of our beloved friend nga walay progress until now,” said Xavier University coach Arvin Martinez who will be in the forefront of the keenly-awaited event.
Booked to see action in the four-team showdown are the Cagayan de Oro Water District (COWD), Ballpals, Subokin and Lagbas Sons.
“These teams have in common kay mga circle of friends gyod ni sila ni Pangkoy Roldan,” Martinez told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro.
Ballpals president `Baby James’ Abucejo, Lagbas’ erstwhile teammate with the COC Scorpions, said he intends to let members of Ballpals identified as known friends of the bombing victim be able to represent the club in the Memorial Cup.
“Mao sab among himoon. Dili pakusganay apan mga amigo gyod ni Roldan ang modula sa among team,” said Subokin’s 6-foot-4 center Noknok San Jose in a chance encounter with this writer.
Martinez said that 2014 Jolas Cup MVP and Pangkoy’s son Dodan Lagbas –who’s now donning Cebu’s South Western University Cobras jersey—will be home “for his dad’s tribute.”
“We’re going to map out our final plans on July 24, though anticipated na nga 2 pm mag-start ang games after the drawing of lots,” further said Martinez, citing ex-Claveria town mayor Rocky Calingin, brgy. Nazareth Kag. Kokong Quiblat and Pelaez Sports Center manager Gerardo “Boboy” Sabal among the main core behind the day-long activity.
