Saturday, July 26, 2014
BARANGAY Tablon’s first ever chess tournament goes into full throttle at Tablon Elementary School in Cagayan de Oro City today, July 26.
National Masters Levi Mercado and Rustum Tolentino lead their respective teams alongside candidate masters Johnel Balquin and Barangay 23 chairman Jaime Joshua Frias II in the fight for the P15,000 top purse.
The three-day chessfest also features the nerve-wracking blitz and inter purok categories.
“What’s good in the three-man team competition is that everybody has the chance to win kay balanse ang strength kombate kaayo ang tapada,” said Frias, who also considered the teams of Fide Master Lyndon Lumancas, Allan Cantonjos and Silverio Abasolo among the solid picks in the wild and woolly race for the top honors.
Sponsored by the Barangay Council of Tablon, the tournament serves as major highlight of Tablon’s 30th Barangay Day and Nutrition Month Celebration.
Tournament director Rev. Fr. Vic E. Arellano said close to P50,000 in total cash prizes will be up for grabs with the second and third placers in team rivalry out to take home P10,000 and P5,000 cash also with trophies. Fourth and fifth finishers will receive P3,000 and P2,000 each.
Individual gold medalists on boards one, two and three will be given P500 apiece.
For the Inter-Purok, the top-three finishers will be awarded P3,000, P2,000 and P1,000, respectively, also with trophies.
Meanwhile, the blitz champion and runner-up will get P1,000 and P700 with the next three best performers out to settle for P500, P300 and P200 each.
“Events like this will surely boost the morale of aspiring chess players in barangay Tablon,” arbiter Lorenzo “Jun” Cuizon told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro.
