ST. MARY’S School Fiat, anchored by the fivesome of Erika Raagas, Kaye Navarro, Abbe San Juan, Angela Compledo and Kiara Cruz, is poised to defend its Cosaa Meet’s volleyball crown after a solid performance in the elimination round.
The SMA tossers of coach Rizalito Abut and assistant coach Ian Zapanta essayed a 2-0 spunking of Rosevale School last Sunday to remain unbeaten after five games in secondary girls’ volleyball action at Cubed’s (Capitol University Basic Education) volleyball court in brgy. Gusa.
“SMA is still a force to reckon with, though we’re hoping to bounce back and get the chance to forge a rematch with them in the finals,” said Xavier University High School coach Angeliz Anoos, whose wards occupied the second spot at 4-1 after yielding to SMA in a thrilling three- set tussle earlier.
SMA’s fifth-straight win was highlighted, however, by the awe-inspiring show of coach Abut’s seldom-used stringers.
As top gun Raagas led an SMA blowout in the first set, Abut took it wise to field his second unit for exposure.
An even more sweeping finish as diminutive setter Diana Kaitlin had her ball serving unbreakable, paving the way for a spectacular 25-0 second set demolition.
“Diana’s ball serving was for the Guinness book record,” later said in jest Atty. Cancio “Pogi” Guibone Jr., the 2014 Cosaa Volleyball’s versatile tournament director.
In elementary rivalry, XU’s boys and girls debuted with a twin wins over Lourdes College Grade School.
Host Cubed, which is still winless in high school girls division, emerged triumphant over Merry Child School and St. Mary’s School that also lost its first match against Lourdes.
