ST. MARY'S School spikers, coming to the game with lots of confidence, zeroed in on host Corpus Christi with a stunning two-straight sets victory in secondary girls’ volleyball of the 2014 Cagayan de Oro City District Meet, which started on Saturday at Corpus Christi ground in Barangay Macasandig.

It’s the local Department of Education's first ever installment of the district meet, involving the private schools. And it was the first encounter of the SMS Fiat and CCS Knights, arguably two of the best volleyball girls teams in the city alongside Xavier University Lady Junior Crusaders.

“I think naka-bolster sa ilang confidence ang recently-held Battle of the Champions at XU gym wherein they played in preliminary match sa Ateneo de Manila and NU Bulldogs. Rubbing elbows with the likes of Alyssa Valdez and Jaja Santiago may have worked wonder sa ilang performance against Corpus Christi,” one observer was overheard as saying.

The first set was breathtaking in its entirety with torrid exchange of leads that was only shattered for good by Erika Raagas’ killer hit for an SMS 32-30 finish.

An injury to Corpus Christi’s regular setter did only further favor SMS in the second set, 25-22 to coach Alex Adeva’s great consternation.

“We know nga kaya ra gyod unta, but the girls allowed themselves to be outplayed by not preparing well before the game. Kulang pa gyod sa desiplina,” lamented Adeva after Corpus Christi’s first defeat in the early stage of the double-elimination round tourney.

Last July, both SMS and CCS took part in Shakey’s V-League’s maiden show in Region 10 at the Nazareth gym here.

“Pero wala namo sila nadula sa Shakey’s kay lahi-lahi among bracket,” SMS trainer Ian Zapanta told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro.

Also unbeaten is the Oro Christian Grace School under new coach Jackie Nery. The team defeated two public schools in a row.
