BALLPALS’ reigning 3-point king `Baby James’ Abucejo had his monstrous debut got spoiled on Sunday by West Point’s thrilling 101-96 conquest of Mexico in the pre-fiesta Ballpals inter-color basketball tourney at brgy. 24’s covered court here.

The sweet-shooting Abucejo, who erupted for 30 points laced with five 3-pointers, saw his team crumbled in the last four minutes of play in the face of West Point’s blistering rally spearheaded by the do-it-all Dan Martinez.

“Sayang, nag lead na’g pito ni-collapse pa gyod sa endgame,” lamented Abucejo, even as he credited Martinez’s own 43-point rampage that mattered the most in forestalling Mexico’s upset bid.

Also anchored by rebounding ace Edward “Play Hard” Baculio and the backcourt foursome of Cariaga, Poliquit, Revilla and Ian Dablio, West Point dominated in the first half action until Abucejo found his range from the 3-point arc alongside Jolas Cup MVP PJ Floriendo to break the game wide-open.

An error pass, however, by Mexico’s starting guard (Stev Panaz) quickly changed the complexion of the game as West Point rattled off four-straight unanswered points, going to the last 2 minutes of the ballgame. “Sayang ang mga tres ni James. Nadigyas hilis na gyod ang sapatos. Sa akong error nabuhi og balik ilang momentum,” Stev Panaz shared.

In the second game, the center-guard tandem of 6-foot-6 Elmaga and Sean Galanida propelled California to a commanding double-digit lead at the outset of the third quarter. But veteran shotmaker Bart Reynolds Acaylar blitzed his way to a 14-point fourth-quarter finish to give Washington a come-from-behind 97-90 victory.

“Paningkamot lang gyod `tong ako kay mga bata pa kaayo ang kontra mga kusog pa kaayo managan,” later said Acaylar, the club’s perennial MVP contender, who enjoyed a lot of help from Thirdie dela Cruz, Sgt. Jadap and “Paul George” Quilab.

Atoy “Lover Boy” Camasura’s Team Illnois opened Sunday afternoon’s triple-header matches with a convincing 79-65 win over Chicago.

Former SPC spitfire Gogoy Del Castillo paced Illinois with 20 points as Pagalan and Sumanga added 15 and 10 markers each. Chicago got 25 points from the hard-working Ronald “Tubid” Embalsado.
