FRONTED by the veterans, Good Health spikers overpowered the youth-laden Iligan Medical Center College to capture the men’s open title of the 11th Loyola Cup Volleyball Tournament, which ended Sunday at the Xavier University gym in Cagayan de Oro City.
The experienced Good Health team of Dr. Irnie Dave Obias dominated Iligan Med in three-straight sets for a trouble-free finish, banking on the well-balanced efforts of Jesse Narciso, JP Babololot, Yannie Saring, Arvin Villanueva, and cousins’ Jeff and Ren Abut.
Dr. Obias’ wards immediately made their presence felt in the opener, 25-10 and never showed any complacency in the second set, 25-18.
Iligan Med had a breather in the third set that saw a torrid exchange of powerful smashes.
A thrilling seesaw battle reached a 24-all deadlock to force an
add-2 situation. But Babololot took matters in his hand, initiating a quick assault that caught Iligan Med off-guarded. A timely block delivered again by Babololot put an exclamation mark to Good Health’s title finish.
The tournament’s best players are the following: Narciso (libero), Babololot (blocker), Villanueva (opposite spiker), Jeff Abut (spiker) and Ren Abut (setter).
Rey Manuel Uy is the lone spiker from Iligan Med who made it to the elite circle of individual awardees as best server.
Saring became the tournament’s most valuable player.
