XU receives grant from carmaker

ASIAN Carmakers Corporation, the Philippine importer of BMW cars, has awarded Xavier University (XU)-Center for Industrial Technology (CIT) a grant to improve its facilities.

XU is offering programs that are tooled for specific skills such as welding, auto servicing, computer literacy, and basic electronics, among others.

Engineer Erwin V. Li, the dean of XU-CIT, said the grant would be used to relocate the Center to a bigger and a more advanced training facility, to be named the Jose Chavez Alvarez Technology Complex, inside the Manresa campus of XU.

As part of the partnership, BMW Philippines will also be tapping the XU-CIT to be its accredited automotive technician training center in the country, Li said.

Early this week, XU-CIT launched its Modular Technician Training Program Department, which will offer short courses and programs lasting for as short as
40 hours to 486 hours.

The college aims to develop “highly marketable workers and entrepreneurs.”

The first trainees under the modular program were 12 out of school youths from different barangays around Xavier University, who were sponsored by the Xavier University Confederation of Parents and Faculty Association (XUCPFA).

The beneficiaries will take a short course on welding for six weeks, which started on July 23. (IKSM)
