‘Running MAD’ on May 24

ENCOURAGING Cebua-sno’s to adopt a healthier lifestyle, Lahug Bry. Capt. Mary Ann de los Santos will kick off the “Running MAD (Make a Difference) for Wellness” marathon on May 24.

De los Santos is organizing her second running event to promote good health.

“I want to make a difference in the wellness part. I have already made a difference in governance,” said de los Santos in a press conference announcing the race at the Lahug barangay hall.

Route

The running competition, which will start at the University of the Philippines Lahug grounds, will have three new categories: the 3 K, 6K and 12K divisions. Last year’s had 5K and 10K.

“It’s a different kind of run because it will allow runners to do a little more,” said expert runner and sportswriter Raffy Uytiepo.
The organizers are expecting many runners. Running clubs and newcomers are invited to join the race.

“We hope to reach a thousand runners. I hope we hit the target,” said Sportswriters Association of Cebu president and marathoner John Pages.

Guarded

Bry. Tinago Councilor Joel Garganera said the route will be safe as Citom, who will control the traffic, and the Eruf will be stationed along the route.

He said there will be water stations along the way and spectators to cheer on the runners.

“We have encouraged representatives from businesses along the route to join,” said Garganera.

De los Santos urged all avid runners and first-time runners to join the event.

“Don’t be afraid to join because we were also first-timers,” said De los Santos, who will be running the 12 K category.

“Your participation in the run will surely make a difference,” she added.

Interested runners can register at the following venues: Sambag I Barangay Hall, Athlete’s Foot Ayala Center Cebu, Cebu City Sports Complex, Holiday Gym and Spa and Waterfront Hotel and Casino’s City Gym.

The entry fee will be P100, inclusive of a singlet. The prizes at stake for the running event are P3,000, P2,000 and P1,000 for the top 3 finishers of the 12K category. However, the prizes are still subject to change. Runners will be expected to be at the starting point at 5 a.m.
