‘25K is a marathon’

ORGANIZERS of the Pilipinas 25K International Marathon are unfazed over threats to boycott their event on Aug. 15, the day of the 5th Cebu Doctors’ University Run.

“It’s their own prerogative if they want to stage a boycott,” International Pharmaceuticals Inc. (IPI) advertising manager Tito dela Merced said during an informal press conference the other night at Sports Exchange Bar and Grill.

He was joined by Philippine Amateur Track and Field Association’s (Patafa) Joselito Santos and race director Joe Deresas.

Updates on President Benigno Aquino III's presidency

Dela Merced said they apologize for the conflict of schedules but they need to push through with their event because of their promotional campaign with their new products.

“We really don’t have any intention na makigdungan, we really didn’t know (there was another event on that day),” dela Merced said.

Dela Merced said they were also upset by what Bro. Carlo S. Bacalla, SDB, wrote in the Speak Out section of Sun.Star Cebu the other day.

“How come he said that it is non-existent? Patafa President Go Teng Kok even confirmed with us that it does exist and the 25KM road races for men and women is a standard distance as per IAAF rule. It even has record-holders,” said dela Merced, who showed a certification from the Patafa president.

The world record holder in the 25K are Kenyans Samuel Kiplimo Kosgei with 1:11:50 and Mary Jepkosgei Keitany with 1:13:14 in the men and women’s division respectively. The Asian record holders are Japan’s Takayuki Matsumiya for men posting 1:13:14 and Mizuki Noguchi for women clocking 1:22:13.

A check with online encyclopedia Wikipedia.org confirmed the records but they were listed under 25K, not the 25K marathon.

Santos also answered why their group is sanctioning the PIM and denied it is a “sub-standard race.”

Not sub-standard

“How can he say that the race is sub-standard when it has not yet even started? Kaya nga I am here to properly measure the route of the race para ma meet talaga nila ang standard measurement ng mga categories nila,” said Santos, who is the Patafa technical coordinator and a national road race course measurer.

Santos also said if the elite runners are really concerned with standard distances, he pointed out the standard distance for half-marathon is not 21K but 21.975 kilometers.

He also said races that have categories beyond 21K can consider using “marathon”.

“ It is already accepted worldwide, even by the International Association of Marathons; they also accepted that they can use marathon as their “lingo” if it goes beyond 21K and there is a 25K marathon,” Dela Merced said.

The website of the Association of International Marathon and Road Distances (www.aimsworldrunning.org), a group which claims 300 races in 90 countries including the prestigious Boston Marathon, pointed out in its “history” that the marathon distance of 42.195-kilometers was set in 1924. It also mentioned a 25K race in Berlin but did not call it a marathon.

The Pilipinas International Marathon, which will have the 25K, 10K and 5K distances, aims to break the record of the 2nd Great Lapu-Lapu Run of 4,000 runners.

25k is a ROAD RACE NOT A

25k is a ROAD RACE NOT A MARATHON

When one commits an error and insists on being correct, he ends up committing more errors. This is in reply to the sports item in Sun Star on July 18 entitled “25 k is a Marathon”. Let me go straight to the point by quoting the International Association of Athletic Federation (IAAF) Competition Rules 2010-2011. Chapter 5 – Technical Rules, Section VIII – Road Races, RULE 240 defines the Distance of Standard Road Races as follows:
“The Standard distances for men and women shall be 10 km, 15 km, 20 km, Half-Marathon, 25 km, 30 km, Marathon (42.195 km), 100 km, and Road Relay.”

This is the reason why in International races, referring to the website of the Association of International Marathon and Road Races (www.aimsworldrunning.org), AIMS (a member based organization of more than 300 of the world’s leading distance races, from over 90 countries) would use the term “half-marathon”, “marathon” (42.195 km), but would refer to 25 km road race, repeat, ROAD RACE and NOT MARATHON.

Looking at this IAAF Rule 240, I wonder on whose authority Mr. Joselito Santos of PATAFA, would say that any race beyond 21 km can consider using “Marathon”. I don’t know what the IAAF would say to this. To me this is out of the international “standard” which the organizers of the IPI road race would claim it to be.

When I said that this 25k Pilipinas International Marathon is “sub-standard”, I did not mean the distance that was measured by the PATAFA official but the “international Marathon” is never a standard used by the IAAF for the 25 km ROAD RACE unless the PATAFA adapts this “ONLY IN DA PELIPENS”. Please, do not dishonor the Greek soldier Pheidippides, a messenger who run (not 25 k) from the Battle of Marathon (the namesake of the race) to Athens by insisting to call your road race a marathon.

Maybe Mr. Tito de la Merced or Mr. Joe Deresas can help me find a website where a 25 km international race sanctioned by the IAAF or AIMS is considered under the category of MARATHON. So far I could not find one. This is what I mean when I talked about “standard”. Here’s is another error from Mr. de la Merced, the Kenyan record holders Samuel Kosgei and Mary Keitany and those Japs holding the Asian record ran in the “Berlin 25 km ROAD RACE”, NOT 25 km MARATHON, repeat, ROAD RACE!

I don’t know if Mr. de la Merced was sincere when he apologized for the conflict of schedule (which they caused) saying “we really didn’t know there was another event that day”. This is the problem when a race organizer is a not a runner. He won’t know what’s going on within the running community. Your apology sounds insincere. If you are truly sorry, then your option is to MOVE YOUR RUN TO ANOTHER DATE or CANCEL IT. Both are equally honorable. It will be much appreciated and will go well with your other promotional events. When you insist on pushing through with your run, you divide and create a conflict within the running community.

Remember that there is wisdom in following the basic rule: “First come, first serve”. The organizers of Pilipinas International Marathon should learn to read the writings on the wall. I think other promotional campaign of IPI’s new Pharmaceutical products, which is IPI’s main event can go on without this race. I hope this race won’t end up with 400 runners that day, instead of 4,000.

I used to think that any

I used to think that any grand running event is called marathon until my Malaysian colleague told me that marathon is 42K run. Lesser than that should be considered as run. It would be better to use the right word that really describes what it is. Let's start to be accurate.

Personally, I don't

Personally, I don't understand why all the fuss. I mean please, whether it's officially a marathon or not, the point is people want to run because they are one in the mission of staying fit and healthy while for some, just because it's fun especially when you're running with friends.

For non-professional runners, it's not even for the prize. It's more for the whole experience of it. It is the latest health craze to hit Cebu now after badminton after all.

I think that's the essence and most important thing and not all these stupid crap of arguing whether it's a marathon or not. DUH!

25 km is a road race not a marathon.

The International Association of Athletic Federation (IAAF) Competition Rules 2010-2011. Chapter 5 – Technical Rules, Section VIII – Road Races, RULE 240 defines the Distance of Standard Road Races as follows:“The Standard distances for men and women shall be 10 km, 15 km, 20 km, Half-Marathon, 25 km, 30 km, Marathon (42.195 km), 100 km, and Road Relay.”

Therefore, 25km International Marathon is non-existent.

It's PATAFA's Joselito Santos' word against the IAAF rule 240.
