42 join GUV Cup

FORTY-TWO teams have confirmed their participation in the 6th edition of the Gov. Gwen Garcia Unity Volleyball (GUV) Cup, which will kick off on Sept. 25 at the Mandaue City Cultural and Sports Complex.

More teams are still expected to join since the deadline of submission is on Sept. 6, GUV Cup vice chairman Glenn Soco said during the general assembly at the Cebu International Convention Center last Saturday.

“I am happy with today’s attendance considering that the deadline is still on Sept. 6. I am commending all mayors, vice-mayors and the rest of their officials for their continued support of this tournament,” Gov. Garcia said.

She added she admires how the local officials are spending for their own team and for believing that through sports, players will be able to surpass not only the challenges on the court, but also off it.

“This is an excellent opportunity, a chance to participate and compete among Cebu’s top players and that can help them increase their level of competency,” Gov. Garcia said.

Garcia said the players will also learn the value of sportsmanship and self-discipline, which, in turn, will help them become responsible citizens.

Gov. Garcia also said they will continue giving Garbo sa GUV Cup awards this year.

This year’s tournament will allow teams to have two reinforcements for the first time.

“These imports will help boost the morale of the players and become the mentors of the aspiring volleyball players,” Cebu Volleyball Association president Jun San Juan said.

He also said there are players from the neighboring islands who have volunteered to play as imports for the local teams.

“However, this is their option, we are not requiring the team,” San Juan said.

San Juan said they are encouraging teams with a tight budget to get sponsors to help them with their expenses. He also stressed the value of the partnership between the local government unit and the private sector.
