LAST year, boxing promotions in Cebu City was relatively quiet because most of the Cebu-based fighters fought overseas. Things are going to change this year as ALA Promotions plan on staging world-class boxing matches here.

ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer believes the local fighters have the same exposure in the international boxing scene, even if they don’t have to leave the Philippines if top-notched bouts will be brought here.

“It is good for the Philippines. The Filipino boxing fans deserve great fights,” Aldeguer said.

Aside from the US, Mexico and Puerto Rico are the other top countries that are continually hosting world-class boxing promotions.

However, bringing in world-class fighters to the Philippines doesn’t come cheap, that is why they are looking for a major sponsor who is willing to work with them.

Aldeguer has already mapped out two major events in the Philippines in May and June, which will feature two of the top fighters from the fabled ALA Gym—world title contender AJ Banal and veteran Michael Domingo.

ALA Promotions is planning to bring in former world title challenger Luis Melendez to Cebu City on May 1 against the 30-year-old Domingo.

“That’s the plan. We are still negotiating. It hasn’t been finalized yet. We are still putting in the final pieces. We are excited in bringing Melendez to the Philippines,” said Aldeguer.
