VETERAN Muay Thai fighter Eugene “El Torrero” Tequero is confident he will be crowned the first champion of the inaugural “Extreme Muay Thai Championship: Art of War” tonight at the Mango Square.
Tequero will be facing Lapu-Lapu City’s Jhon Jier “The Dangerous” Torbiso in the main event. The two were presented yesterday during a press conference at the Sports Exchange Bar and Grill at the Mango Square.
Updates on President Benigno Aquino III's presidency
“I have been a Muay Thai fighter for 10 years and my experience and exposure can help me win this fight,” said Tequero, who is a 2007 Asian Muay Thai Championship bronze medalist.
He added he has been training for six weeks in preparation for his first professional fight.
Lapu-Lapu City’s Torbiso admitted he feels intimidated by Tequero but remains confident he will beat him.
“I may not have played Muay Thai as long as Tequero but my experience as a kick boxer since I was eight years and being an MMA fighter holding a record of 3 wins and 1 loss will give me a very good chance,”17-year-old Torbiso said.
In the supporting event, Joseph “The Samurai” Eder of Misamis Oriental will face Cebu
City’s Gino “The Projectile” Po.
“I came here to win and I am confident that I will,” said the 21-year-old Eder, who started to get interested in combat sports when he kept on playing martial arts in computer games like Street Fighter.
Po, 21, was already in Martial Arts when he was still young and practiced taekwando before he shifted to Muay Thai.
On the other hand, promoters Michael Arquillano and PJ Tormis of Arquillano Muay Thai
promotions, Inc. said they see a rapid growth of the sport in the Cebu community, that is why they put up the first professional fight in Muay Thai,
“This is this the start, we are planning to have this four times a year,” Arquillano said.
The event will consist of seven bouts with athletes competing for professional and amateur rankings. It will also have a special guest, Thailand’s legendary five-time Lumpinee Muay Thai Champion, Ajarn Poodparnoi “The Golden Leg” Worawoot.
