A CENTURY-old acacia tree fell early this morning on the national highway in Sitio Katugasan, Barangay Perrelos in Carcar City, blocking traffic on both sides of the road.

No one was hurt in the incident but a tailoring-refrigeration-aircon services shop and a sari-sari store were damaged.

Perrelos Barangay Captain Richard Ybañez told Sun.Star Cebu that the acacia tree that fell at 4:33 a.m. is bigger than the one that fell in Barangay Balud, San Fernando town (next to Carcar City) last month. He said that the tree is, so far, the first century-old tree that fell in the last decade in his barangay.

Ybañez also said that the heritage trees in his barangay are protected by a presidential declaration. He, however, thinks that some of the trees may have to be cut if they are already deemed life-threatening.

Ybañez and Carcar City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office head Jojo Campugan oversaw the clearing operations.

As of 10:50 a.m. today, the highway is already passable but for now, authorities are allowing only one side of the road to be used.

Shortly after the tree fell, buses and smaller vehicles from the south were made to take a smaller road from Awayan in Poblacion 3 to Barangay Liburon to Barangay Can-Asujan to Upper Katugasan in Perrelos and exit to the national road in going to Cebu City. No 10-wheeler trucks and other heavy vehicles were allowed to take the detour.

On Monday, the Department and Environment and Natural Resources 7 will cut seven diseased acacia trees in the City of Naga, saying these pose threat to the public. The agency, however, said that aside from the ones in the City of Naga, 41 more "defective" or "diseased" trees in San Fernando town also need to be cut.
