KNOWLEDGE process outsourcing (KPO) company GGS Technical Publication Services opened a facility in Cebu.

A top official said the expansion in the Philippines, particularly in Cebu, was meant to maximize Cebu’s competitive engineers and serve the company’s growing Asian clients.

“The country’s education system is similar to the United States. Cebu, in particular, produces highly-qualified engineers,” said GGS Asia managing director Joseph Richard Aliason.

Aliason said the opening of a technical illustration and parts management facility here is meant to expand the company’s operation so it could cater to its growing number of clients, particularly in Asia. Among GGS’ top clients are Caterpillar, Bucyrus and Honda Motors.

Technical information

GGS Technical Publication Services is a US-based provider of a variety of onshore, near-shore and offshore-based technical information solutions, specifically developed to meet the needs of major equipment and component manufacturers.

The company develops extensive parts information database management systems, creates complex technical illustrations, and designs computer-based training materials and Internet-based information management solutions for its clients.

The company serves the industrial equipment and transportation, construction, and agricultural equipment industries; the aviation and aerospace industries; and the United States government and military.

Aside from Cebu, the firm also has offices in United States, Puerto Rico, India and China. GGS is a KPO firm that provides higher-value services that require advanced information search as well as analytical, interpretation and technical skills.

GGS-Cebu currently employs 25 employees in the office located in Cebu I.T. Tower at the Cebu Business Park.

To ensure a continuous supply of engineers, Aliason said they have established a local academe partnership with the University of San Jose Recoletos for their engineering students. The firm also hopes to tap other schools and universities.

Optimistic

“The opening of GGS here is a manifestation of how optimistic we are in Cebu. Its business-friendly climate, inexpensive but high-quality workforce and Cebu’s recent recognition as an emerged BPO destination prompted companies like us to expand operations,” he said.

The back office and the KPO sectors have been growing at a faster rate than the voice-based sector, the Business Process Association of the Philippines said. The association said that in the next four or five years, voice and non-voice services may already be of the same size in the Philippines.

Cebu City pledged to improve and increase the pool of highly-qualified skilled workers with technical knowledge so it can lead in the booming KPO sector.

Among the services offered by KPO companies are business and financial consulting, legal processes and transcription, health information management, medical and pharmaceutical expertise, intellectual property research, contact centers, creative services, animation and engineering design.
