ESTABLISHING a security department or team in a company should not be seen as a “drag on the company’s profitability” but as an important support that helps protect employees and properties from workplace violence or disasters, a security expert said.

Stephen Cutler, president and chief executive officer of the Official Global Control Corp. (OCG Corp.), said that while security is considered one of the areas where companies cut back as they face economic problems, top management officials should realize its worth on a long-term basis.

“There are so many threats businesses face today. We should look beyond natural disaster, for example, mere civil disturbances, workplace violence or cyber incidents that affect businesses. The management should see the worth of a security department not just a drag on profitability but a contributor to the company’s bottom line on a long term business,” Cutler said in an interview at the sidelines of the 5th National Convention of the Philippine Society of Industrial Awareness held last week.

Cutler said a security department that oversees the welfare of the employees and the company itself improves productivity. He said employees have confidence working in a company when they know they are safe and protected.

“It is not just a wallet issue, it’s a mindset. Companies don’t have to invest millions of pesos to include the establishment of a security department in the company’s financial operations. Establishing one not only helps saves lives and property but also restores productivity,” he said.

Cutler, who is a former Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Asia-Pacific chief, cited the failed robbery of an armored car parked outside the Robinson’s Place and described the incident as a wake-up call not only for business owners but also for local officials.

He said businesses, whether small or big, should review security procedures and should have close coordination with the local government unit.

“LGUs need to be integrated in the planning,” he said.

Cutler also said that top management officials also need to engage themselves in crafting security plans and practice disaster responses so they could make informed decisions.

One example, he cited, is the accessibility of passwords in the workplace, especially in times of emergencies.
